Handle with Care: Managing Behavior and Building Teams Culturally

How does an organization get a group diverse people who largely disagree with each other to work together toward a common goal?  It does this through culture, a common set of internalized organizational values.  But it’s not easy.  Organizations often spend little time intentionally cultivating the right culture for success, and this leads to disfunction.  So, in this session we will discuss building a culture around the idea of care – care about the job and care about the people we work with.  We will talk about how to create high-functioning teams, how to help employees internalize the goals of the organization, and most of all, how to harness the productive disagreements we need to move forward and be successful.

    Rodney Klein EEO Training

Rodney Klein has over sixteen years of experience as an EEO trainer and presenter as owner of Rodney Klein EEO Training and with the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He is a recognized authority in federal EEO law and is a sought-after speaker and trainer across Texas. He regularly educates groups on workplace discrimination, harassment, retaliation and Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act. He also trains audiences on addressing workplace behavior, creating civil cultures, understanding and reducing microaggressions, and minimizing unconscious bias in decision making. He coaches organizational leaders on how to re-think EEO in ways that better equip them to navigate the challenges brought on by an ever-changing social landscape. Rodney believes that understanding EEO both legally and culturally is the key in creating productive, efficient and ultimately inspired workforces.

    Chris Scherer

Law Office of Chris A. Scherer

This presentation will cover performance evaluations, investigations, corrective actions, terminations, and other useful tips.

In his experience, Chris has learned to "prepare for the worst and hope for the best," a philosophy he applies in his personal life and his profession.

Upon earning his Juris Doctorate from Tulane Law School, Chris Scherer worked for eight years as an attorney with Haynes & Boone, LLP, before opening his own private practice in 2004. He is certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Labor & Employment Law, a distinction earned by fewer than 1% of Texas attorneys. He has served on the Boards of Directors of the North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and the Montessori School of San Antonio, and is currently a member of San Antonio Human Resources Management Association, North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and the San Antonio Bar Association.

Since 1995, Chris and his family have enjoyed living in San Antonio where the weather is mild and the salsa is spicy. A 4th generation Texan, Chris is an avid reader of history and mysteries and an outdoor enthusiast. In the U.S. Marine Corps, during Operation Desert Storm, then Captain Scherer led a 150-Marine unit in combat operations where he practiced the philosophy of “prepare for the worst and hope for the best.” He continues to take this approach in his personal and professional life.

    Employment Law Update

Things are always changing in the employment law area. New statutes continue to be passed by Congress and state legislatures on an ongoing basis. More often, practitioners have to deal with changes developed by federal and state enforcement agencies such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. To make things more interesting (difficult?), a United States Supreme Court case from 2024 will significantly impact how courts use regulations in making rulings in many cases. In the past, courts were obligated to defer to agency regulations, unless the regulation was written in a manner beyond the agency’s authority. Now, they have greater latitude to disregard the regulation and interpret the relevant statute as they choose. Along with these ongoing changes, all of use are still following the effect of the new administration’s agenda which is being implemented within the first one hundred days and those that follow. All of this and more will be discussed. Please bring your questions.

Dan Stern advises employers on labor and employment matters including affirmative action plans; wage and hour issues; and discrimination and harassment claims. By recommending and developing effective employment policies and procedures, he helps clients reduce the risk of employment-related lawsuits. He is Board Certified in Labor and Employment Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.  Dan graduated from St. Mary’s School of Law in 1990, cum laude

Dan works with employer clients to bring their existing workplace policies into compliance with best practices in the human resources field, and he provides day-to-day counseling which enables clients to make wise decisions in human resource matters. Understanding the frequent and complex employment issues continually faced by today’s employers, Dan has designed his practice so that he is readily and quickly available to his clients. He is a frequent speaker and author on employment matters and labor-related legislative changes, with a particular focus on wage and hour issues.
